Amid political turmoil and party split, how Indira Gandhi returned to power in 1971 Lok Sabha polls - The Indian Express

Image
The fourth Lok Sabha was dissolved late at night on December 27, 1970, almost 15 months before the expiration of its term. In an address to the people of India, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi said "there comes a time in the life of a nation when the government…has to take an unusual step to cut through difficulties in order to solve…pressing problems". She wanted to turn the election into a referendum on her social and economic reforms, including the nationalisation of banks, and abolition of the privy purses of former princes. Polls were held between March 1 and 10, 1971. Split in the Congress party Even when Jawaharlal Nehru was alive, several Congress leaders had been unhappy with the Kamaraj Plan, which required them to give up government positions and commit themselves to rebuilding the party. Their grievances deepened after Indira manoeuvred her way to the prime ministership after the death of Lal Bahadur Shastri in January 1966, and remained in the post after the 196

Dengue and severe dengue - World Health Organization (WHO)

Image
Key facts Dengue is a viral infection transmitted to humans through the bite of infected mosquitoes. About half of the world's population is now at risk of dengue with an estimated 100–400 million infections occurring each year. Dengue is found in tropical and sub-tropical climates worldwide, mostly in urban and semi-urban areas. While many dengue infections are asymptomatic or produce only mild illness, the virus can occasionally cause more severe cases, and even death. Prevention and control of dengue depend on vector control. There is no specific treatment for dengue/severe dengue, and early detection and access to proper medical care greatly lower fatality rates of severe dengue. Overview Dengue (break-bone fever) is a viral infection that spreads from mosquitoes to people. It is more common in tropical and subtropical climates. Most people who get dengue will not have symptoms. But for those who do, the most common symptoms are high fever, headache, body aches, nausea, and ras

Scripps School of Journalism director, and Craig Davis, a strategic communications professor, are involved in the firm's planning process. Their goal is to create a hands-on learning environment for journalism majors on the strategic communication track, similar to how those on the news and information track can get involved in student-run publications or broadcast clubs.   "We want this to mimic the advertising and PR profession and we want students to work on real projects," Davis said. Trump at Supreme Court, Israel-Hamas war protests, Arizona fake electors, bird flu, NFL draft: Daily Briefing - USA TODAY

Thursday's headlines: The Supreme Court will hear a case on whether a former president can be criminally prosecuted for actions taken in office; campus protesters were met by police at USC and UT Austin; 11 fake electors were charged in Arizona; bird flu was detected in milk; the NFL draft begins tonight. 🙋🏼‍♀️ I'm Nicole Fallert, Daily Briefing author. Why is everyone telling you to look between letters on your keyboard? A precedent-setting Supreme Court case A case before the Supreme Court on Thursday marks the first time the justices are asked about immunity for alleged criminal acts for former presidents. McCormick gets Trump's endorsement in Pennsylvania's Senate race despite awkward history - The Associated Press

Image
Former President Donald Trump endorsed U.S. Senate candidate David McCormick of Pennsylvania on Saturday, urging his supporters in the state to "go out and vote for him" in one of the year's most hotly contested Senate races. Trump's endorsement came two years after he successfully helped sink McCormick in Pennsylvania's Senate GOP primary, creating an awkward dynamic between the two men who will share the ticket in a state that is critical to control of the White House and Senate. "He's a good man. He wants to run a good ship," Trump said during a rally in the eastern Pennsylvania town of Schnecksville. "He's a smart guy. He was a very successful guy. He's given up a lot to do this." McCormick — who splits his time in Connecticut , where he has a home — did not attend the rally. He was at a parents' weekend with his daughter, a campaign spokesperson said. McCormick responded on social media, writing on the X platfor

This report examines an upsurge of anti-Israel events, antisemitism, and statements in South Asia, especially in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Pakistan-controlled Azad Jammu & Kashmir and in Indian Kashmir and other cities of India, during the holy month of Ramadan, starting March 23, 2023. An exhibition organized in Herat by the Cultural Center of the Consulate General of Iran as part of month-long Al-Quds Day celebrations also advocated "nuclear extinction" of Israel,[1] while a Pakistani columnist called nuclear Pakistan an antidote to "the cancer named Israel."[2] These events were associated with the Israeli raids on Al-Aqsa Mosque in the first week of April 2023, but mainly Al-Quds Day, an annual event sponsored by the state of Iran, launched by late Iranian leader Ayatollah Ali Khomeini. The event is celebrated generally on the last Friday of Ramadan, which this year was on April 21, to emphasize the call for the liberation of Jerusalem. However, Al-
