They Care About Employees, Honest!: Google Lays Off Head of Mental Health and Wellbeing - Breitbart

Image
Tech giant Google recently laid off around 12,000 employees, including the company's director of mental health and wellbeing. The Masters of the Universe removing their head of wellbeing is particularly important as their woke Silicon Valley employee base are seeking "psychological safety" after seeing their colleagues shown the door. Business Insider reports that around 12,000 employees, or 6.4 percent of Google's workforce, were recently let go in a move that greatly angered the company's staff. Sundar Pichai, the CEO of the tech giant, explained the layoffs as the result of overhiring, but numerous current and former employees have criticized the business for how it handled the situation. Sabo mocks Google CEO Sundar Pichai (unsavoryagents.com) Breitbart News previously reported that long-term employees felt "100% disposable" after the layoffs: Before being laid off, engineering manager Justin Moore had worked for Google for more than 16 y

Russia's war in Ukraine: Live updates - CNN

Image
Thursday's wave of Russian air strikes damaged energy infrastructure in Ukraine's southern Odesa region, causing "major troubles with the power supply," regional governor Maksym Marchenko said on Telegram.  "There are hits and damage to several energy infrastructure facilities in the Odesa region and other regions of the country," Marchenko wrote. The strikes came less than 24 hours after the historic center of the regional capital, the port city of Odesa, was added to the World Heritage List by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). UNESCO chief Audrey Azoulay had said then he hoped the move would help protect the city from the war. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said Thursday that the attack was in response to the listing. "Among [the] targets of today's mass missile strike, Russia struck Odesa causing massive power outages," Kuleba wrote on Twitter. "T

India to spend $320 million to promote homegrown payments network - TechCrunch

Image
India will spend nearly $320 million to promote cards on RuPay and for low-value UPI transactions, the latest in a series of moves by New Delhi to fuel the growth of its homegrown payments network. New Delhi approved a plan Wednesday to spend $318.4 million for the promotion of RuPay debit cards and low-value person-to-merchant transactions on UPI during the period of current financial year ending in March 2023. "Under the said scheme, acquiring banks will be provided financial incentive, for promoting Point-of-Sale (PoS) and e-commerce transactions using RuPay Debit Cards and low-value BHIM-UPI transactions (P2M) for the current financial year FY 2022-23," it said in a statement. The Narendra Modi-led government's move is an attempt to assuage the concerns of banks that have questioned the financial viability of the UPI network. UPI, a six-year-old payments network built by a coalition of banks, has become the most popular way Indians transact online today. The pay

New Zealand's Labour Party scrambles to find PM Ardern's successor - FRANCE 24 English

Image
Issued on: 20/01/2023 - 04:11 Jacinda Ardern's shock resignation sparked a push on Friday for New Zealand to choose its first Maori prime minister, as a small pack of candidates emerged for the top job. Ardern, a global figurehead for progressive politics, stunned New Zealand on Thursday by announcing her abrupt exit from office, less than three years after securing a second term in a landslide election win. The 42-year-old -- who steered the country through natural disasters, the Covid pandemic, and its worst-ever terror attack -- said she no longer had "enough in the tank". Ardern resigned with no clear successor, and her ruling Labour Party is now scrambling to settle on a replacement. Labour members of parliament will try to elect the next prime minister on Sunday -- with the winning candidate needing two-thirds of the vote. If that does not

‘The Lincoln Project’ Depicts Vanity and Self-Regard Among the Anti-Trump Right: TV Review - Variety

Image
It's been said that former President Donald Trump corrupts all who enter his orbit — that it's impossible to deal directly with him without taking on his amorality and crassness. "The Lincoln Project," a new documentary series on Showtime, depicts that process among his political opposition. Here, people devoted to ousting Trump mirror his rhetorical style and his self-regard. And it's in subtly making this case that the documentary succeeds, even as it grows punishing to watch. The Lincoln Project, a circle of former high-level Republican strategists who made viral anti-Trump ads, seemed throughout the 2020 presidential election to be, Trumpishly, more focused on brand promotion than political work. "No one's ever fucked with a candidate like we've fucked with a candidate," Lincoln Project co-founder Rick Wilson says early in the doc; those schemes include a Times Square billboard, attention-getting for attention's s

Who are the House Republicans voting against Kevin McCarthy for speaker? - PBS NewsHour

Image
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Republicans opposing Rep. Kevin McCarthy's bid to become the next House speaker generally have made their mark as part of the GOP's ultra-conservative wing, eager to pick a fight with leaders from both parties and rarely finding major bipartisan bills to be a good thing. Most are members of the House Freedom Caucus, a hard-right group that also had strained relationships with former House speakers John Boehner and Paul Ryan. "They can't tell you what they're for. They can tell you everything they're against. They're anarchists. They want total chaos. Tear it all down and start over. That's where their mindset is," Boehner once told Vanity Fair. READ MORE: The GOP drama behind the House speaker vote Still, most members of the Freedom Caucus do support McCarthy's bid. Shashi Tharoor's attempt at understanding Ambedkar's life : The ... - The Tribune India

Image
Raja Sekhar Vundru Shashi Tharoor's journey as a writer interestingly makes a sojourn this year to write on Dr BR Ambedkar. Tharoor started his fictional journey with the modern version of Mahabharata, 'The Great Indian Novel', followed by non-fictional discourses to assess India as a nation. He attracted attention with his anti-colonial tirade, 'Inglorious Empire: What British Did to India', and wrote recently on nationalism and democracy. The Congress leader wrote a brief biography of Nehru in 2003, and now his biography on Ambedkar comes with 'three caveats' for the reader. First, that the book is on Ambedkar's ideas and 'not of a man of physical adventure'. The second is on the interchangeability of words such as untouchable, Dalit, etc. Third, importantly, is that he should not be accused of being a non-Dalit in his analysis of Ambedkar. Two-thirds of the book is dedicated to Ambedkar's life, as fast-paced reading in five parts. Th

A former top FBI official in New York has been arrested over his ties to a Russian oligarch, law enforcement sources told ABC News Monday. Charles McGonigal, who was the special agent in charge of counterintelligence in the FBI's New York Field Office, is under arrest over his ties to Oleg Deripaska, a Russian billionaire who has been sanctioned by the United States and criminally charged last year with violating those sanctions. McGonigal retired from the FBI in 2018. He was arrested Saturday afternoon after he arrived at JFK Airport following travel in Sri Lanka, the sources said. McGonigal pleaded not guilty to the four-count indictment unsealed Monday in Manhattan. The judge ordered him released on a $500,000 personal recognizance bond plus restrictions on his travel and prohibitions on contacting anyone associated with the case. He was charged along with a court interpreter, Sergey Shestakov, who also worked with Deripaska. McGonigal, 54, is charged with violating U.S. sanctio

Who Was Shirley Temple? Google Doodle Honors Hollywood Star Turned Diplomat - Newsweek

Image
Today's Google Doodle celebrates American actor, singer, dancer, and diplomat Shirley Temple. Google's decision to celebrate Temple on June 9 with a Google Doodle—a special temporary alteration to its homepage logo that commemorates holidays, events, achievements and historical figures—isn't casual. It was on this date in 2015 that Temple's hometown of Santa Monica, California, opened "Love, Shirley Temple," a special exhibit held at the Santa Monica History Museum featuring a collection of her rare memorabilia. Born in 1928, Temple was barely six-year-old when she captured the imagination of a nation as she secured a role in the toe-tapping musical Stand Up and Cheer in 1934, a year in which she starred in a dozen movies including Bright Eyes , where she performed On the Good Ship Lollipop , which became to be known as one of her most famous routines. A year later, Temple received a special Juvenile Academy Award for her outstanding contribution as juvenil
