The only way you're going to get involved is by being involved' - Mackinac Center for Public Policy

Image
One piece of advice given to young people who want to get involved in politics is to volunteer for political campaigns. There is a constant demand for extra help from campaigns, and this is how many people get their foot in the door in politics. On the Overton Window podcast, Luke Derheim, perennial volunteer turned campaign manager and legislative aide for state representative Bill G. Schuette (R-Midland), talks with us about the changing nature of legislative staff work. In campaign outreach, there are a few things campaigners look for. "The most important factors are how often that person votes and whether we can tell if they have a party preference," Derheim says. When campaigning in a Republican primary election, the people who have a long history of voting in Republican primaries get the most attention. "If you're a hardliner on the other party, we don't want to waste our time talking to you because it doesn't look like you can be convinced," D...

Monday's Google Doodle Celebrates Biologist Anne McLaren - Forbes

Image
Monday's Google Doodle celebrates the 94 th birthday of biologist Anne McClaren, who discovered a way to grow mammal embryos in lab cultures. Her work, published in 1958, laid the foundation for in-vitro fertilization 20 years later, along with new research techniques. Today, most medical and biological research that eventually impacts humans begins with mice. At a basic level, most mammals are similar enough that scientists can use mice as "models" for how drugs, genes, or diseases might work in humans. There's even a statue honoring laboratory mice in front of the Russian Academy of Sciences' Institute of Cytology and Genetics in Novosibirsk, Sibera. The bronze statue features an elderly, bespectacled mouse knitting a DNA molecule. The Monument to the Laboratory Mouse was set up in 2013.
