About USAFacts - USAFacts

Image
The seeds of USAFacts were planted when former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer retired from tech and focused on philanthropy. To determine the best way to make an impact, he searched for solid, reliable, impartial numbers to understand what governments do with American tax dollars. How are they spent? Who is served, and what are the outcomes? But those numbers weren't readily available, and a simple search turned into a quest to uncover and understand the government by the numbers, not the rhetoric. He assembled a small team of economists, writers, and researchers who started combing through government data. Their eye-opening report laid the foundation for USAFacts. Adblock test (Why?)

Newspaper headlines: DUP leader charged and 'hefty' water bill rise - BBC

Image
By BBC News Staff Newspapers in Northern Ireland focus on the resignation of Sir Jeffrey Donaldson. The Belfast Telegraph says he is likely to step aside as an MP, and sources have told the paper he has left Belfast for his flat in London. The i warns that if hardliners take over the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), the Executive could collapse again. But the Guardian argues there is no immediate threat to Stormont. The Irish Times - based in the Republic - agrees that it is in nobody's interest to abandon power sharing - but adds "this is a crisis which is just beginning". EPA Both the Times and the Daily Mail are calling for defence spending to rise to 3% of GDP by 2030. The Times, in its editorial, says the current spend is too limited with threats from Russia, China, and Iran - arguing that Britain merely relying on its allies would be "a dereliction of national duty". The Mail, which is running a campaign on the issue, has a poll on its front page that sugg

Black, Hispanic and young voters abandon Biden, new poll shows - USA TODAY

This story has been corrected to note the overall poll was of registered voters. President Joe Biden heads into the election year showing alarming weakness among stalwarts of the Democratic base, with Donald Trump leading among Hispanic voters and young people. One in 5 Black voters now say they'll support a third-party candidate in November. In a new USA TODAY/Suffolk University Poll, Biden's failure to consolidate support in key parts of the coalition that elected him in 2020 has left him narrowly trailing Trump, the likely Republican nominee, 39%-37%; 17% support an unnamed third-party candidate. When seven candidates are specified by name, Trump's lead inches up to 3 percentage points, 37%-34%, with independent Robert F. Kennedy Jr. at the top of the third-party candidates at 10%. The findings underscore the formidable political task the president faces this year to win a second term. Prep for the polls: See who is running for president and compare where they stand on

The 2024 Swing States: North Carolina Could Sway the 2024 Election | Elections | U.S. News - U.S. News & World Report

Image
North Carolina has voted for the Republican presidential candidate in just about every election over the past several decades. But will it be a battleground in November? Pundits – and the president – think so, due at least in part to the coastal state's razor-thin margins of victory in recent presidential contests. A swing state, according to a literal definition, is one that's "considered to play a key role in the outcome of presidential elections" and where candidates of both the Democratic and Republican parties "have similar levels of support." The group of such states each presidential cycle is often similar, although variations can occur due to factors like changing demographics and turnout. Georgia, for example, recently swung into the swing state category in the wake of President Joe Biden's surprising win in 2020 and other lower-ticket Democratic victories. Democrats – looking back at former President Trump's narrow victory in North Caroli

US Visa processing time to reduce with fresh $50m spending - Daily Pakistan Global

Image
WASHINGTON - The US government has earmarked $50 million in funding for the U.S. Department of State to reduce visa wait times for inbound international visitors. The Congress approved the federal government's spending on March 23 and the bill was signed into law by U.S. President Joe Biden on Saturday; the spending would also help reduce the passport backlog. As far as the details are concerned, the law gives the State Department some discretion. For instance, it doesn't specifically restrict the spending for any visa category, such as for business and leisure rather than education. Moreover, the law has not specified any country for which the visa wait time would be reduced. The spending is the follow-up of excessive lobbying by travel groups across the country who contend that the wait time for some categories hovers around 400. The US government has taken multiple measures to reduce the wait time including waiving interviews for low-risk visa applicants, moving staff to

Google Play Newsstand combines Magazines and Currents apps - Softonic EN

Image
Google has released its new Google Play Newsstand app, which combines both Play Magazines and Google Currents apps. The new app rolls in the magazine purchasing ability of Play Magazines with the news feed features of Currents. The app feels like a hybrid between Apple's Newsstand app and Flipboard. There's no flipping animation like in Flipboard but users can scroll through a long list of stories. Tapping on a story opens it up within the app and the story will be grayed out once you jump back into the main feed, signifying that it has been read. There are tons of new sources to choose from to consolidate into a feed, which resembles Google+'s card-like layout. You can add more sources by navigating to the source list and tapping on the "+" button next to the source you want to add. Popular newspapers like The New York Times , Los Angeles Times , and Wall Street Journal are all in the app. Want something more in depth? You can purchase individual issues or subsc

Google's Flagship Lineup Compared: Pixel 8 vs. Pixel 7 vs. Pixel 6 - CNET

Image
Google's latest flagship phone, the Pixel 8, made its debut in October. It starts at $699 (£699, AU$1,199), which is $100 more than last year's Pixel 7 and the Pixel 6 before that. The Pixel 8 lineup is intended for people who are looking to upgrade to a flagship Android phone that takes excellent photos, which has been Google's signature focus. The Pixel 8 features a 50-megapixel main camera and a 12-megapixel ultrawide camera, which are the same as those in the Pixel 7 and Pixel 6. It also has a higher-resolution 10-megapixel selfie camera.  Arguably the biggest Pixel 8 improvement however, has come by way of its software, which is one of the key attractions of a Pixel phone. The Pixel 8 series offers seven years of support for Android OS and security upgrades, forcing rival Samsung to extend its coverage for its new Galaxy S24 lineup to stay competitive. It also represents a significant upgrade over the Pixel 7 series, which Google pledged to s
