Companies have been fleeing to low-tax states. Here's why that may be bad news for workers - CNBC

Image
Corporations are not afraid to pick up and move. Many states are offering companies enticing incentives like lower taxes if they move their operations, but a superior business climate doesn't always equate to a superior working climate. "Things that benefit employers when it comes to their bottom line or their margin, in terms of economic expansion, they can directly conflict with things that benefit actual employees and residents and workers," said Niani Tolbert, founder and CEO of Hire Black Now, an organization that merges recruiting and talent development to improve the upward mobility of Black women in the U.S. workforce. Many of the states with the most attractive business incentives also have been passing controversial social policies that some businesses and the general public have pushed back on. Those issues include LGBTQ restrictions, limiting voting access, abortion restrictions and preventing schools and employers from holding diversity and inclusion training

Thanks to Temporary Changes, U.S. Department of Education Announces Public Service Loan Forgiveness Surpasses $10 Billion in Debt Relief - US Department of Education

Today, the U.S. Department of Education (Department) announced that it has approved more than $10 billion in debt relief for over 175,000 borrowers in 10 months through the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program. This follows changes the Department announced in October 2021 that transformed the program by changing certain rules to make it easier for public servants with federal student loans to have their debts cancelled. "For far too long, teachers, nurses, veterans, government employees, and countless others dedicated to serving our country found Public Service Loan Forgiveness to be nothing more than an empty promise, and before President Biden took office, only 7,000 borrowers ever managed to qualify," said U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona. "Today's announcement that we've surpassed $10 billion in forgiveness for more than 175,000 public servants shows that the Biden-Harris administration's efforts to cut red tape are turning the Public

Gmail's new look based on Google's Material Design 3 rolling out to more users - The Indian Express

Image
Gmail is undoubtedly the most popular email service in the world. And it looks like Google is once again bringing a new look to the platform based on Material Design 3. A few days ago, Gmail Product Manager announced they will be unifying Gmail, Chat, Meet and Spaces in a single window. The new design appears to be rolling out to more users now. The new panel lets users easily switch between multiple apps, making multitasking easier. However, the redesigned panel is only visible if you have turned on Chat. Those who use Labels to organise inbox will now see separate sections for system and custom labels. The Gmail team has revamped chat with users can now see snippets of incoming messages from bubbles instead of having to open the conversation.  More importantly, you can now easily search for messages using the improved filters and search result algorithm. If you don't plan on using the new two-panel interface and want to get rid of the apps panel on the left, you

Stadia just made it a lot easier to play the Resident Evil Village demo - The Verge

Image
Capcom has launched a demo of Resident Evil Village that's powered by Google's Stadia cloud gaming tech, letting people test out the horror game in a browser. In a press release, Google says that the idea is to let people try out the game, no matter what device they own. The game and its demo were already available for Stadia subscribers, but now, anyone can try it out for free provided they have a supported web browser and an internet connection faster than 10 megabits a second. You don't even need a Google account; you just navigate to the website, enter your birthday (the game's rated M), and click the play button. As for how the demo looks... you certainly get what you pay for with the browser version. Here are a few comparison shots with the Stadia version of the demo on the left and the PS5 version on the right. (The PS5 version is running at 4K, and Capcom's demo maxes out at 1080p).

Google gives LG TV owners three free months of Stadia Pro - Digital Trends

Image
Google and LG today announced that they're giving three months of access to Stadia Pro to new and existing owners of LG TVs. Stadia is Google's cloud-based gaming service that works with various devices such as LG televisions, Chromecast with Google, and other supported hardware. There's nothing to plug in — you just pair a controller and get things going with the Stadia app on your phone, and you're good to go. Stadia itself is free — you just buy the games. Stadia Pro costs $10 a month and ramps things up with discounts on some titles — and others made free altogether. It also unlocks 4K resolution at 60 frames per second and 5.1 surround sound with HDR. Phil Nickinson/Digital Trends There is a little fine print here, of course. While the deal is open to anyone who has an LG TV running WebOS 5.0 or higher, you'll need to be a new subscriber to Stadia Pro. You'll also need to take advantage of the deal from August 10, 2022, to January 31, 2023. The deal

Rajamouli Explains RRR’s ‘Global Hit’ NTR Scene - Mirchi9

For those who don't already know, Jr NTR's interval bang scene from RRR got a monstrous response from all quarters. It is safe to say that this particular sequence is a global hit as even western audience were in awe of the same. In his latest interaction with Russo Brothers of The Gray Man fame, Rajamouli opened up about this particular sequence. "This scene came from NTR's character designing. We had to build the sequence based on the character's strengths. Bheem is from jungle and it is natural for him to have connection with animals. That's how this sequence was designed. Liz Cheney and the Never Trump Republicans’ ultimate defeat - Vox.com

Image
The bad news for Never Trump Republicans this week wasn't just that Liz Cheney lost the primary for her Wyoming congressional seat on Tuesday. It wasn't even that she lost by such an overwhelming margin. It was that her loss fit a pattern in which the GOP's voters have roundly rejected Republican after Republican who voted to impeach Trump. Only two of the 10 House Republicans who did so will even be on the ballot in November — one of whom is running in a district that Joe Biden won by more than 10 percentage points in 2020. It's clear at this point that the Republican Party is a pro-Trump party, and that its voters recoil from candidates who are ardently opposed to the former president. The results of this primary season — and Cheney's loss in particular — show a Never Trump wing on the verge of extinction. Cheney's loss follows those this year of Reps. Peter Meijer of Michigan, Jaime Herrera Beutler of Washington, and Tom Rice of South Carolina, among thos

MACO sees Maryland Politicians discuss the future of the state - 47abc - WMDT

Image
August 19, 2022 OCEAN CITY, Md-  Politicians, government agencies, and businesses flocked to the Ocean City convention center, for a chance to talk about the future of the state, and the accomplishments, issues, and developments in the state. For Senator Ben Cardin, the event was a chance to sell the benefits of the Inflation Reduction Act, and the Water Redevelopment Act, both of which he says will impact the Eastern Shore. "I'm happy to be here with good news the bills that congress has passed this has been a very productive congress," he said adding "fifty thousand Marylanders use insulin the cap on insulin is what they are interested in." For the Water Redevelopment act, he says the bill is a way to preserve and protect local harbors across the state, that don't see the traffic that Baltimore does. "We have many smaller harbors and we are going to now set aside so they don't have to co

Dark money, debate and elections - The Nation

Image
When Congress passed 2002's bipartisan McCain-Feingold bill on campaign finance reform, many hoped for a new era in US politics. It set limits on individual and political action committees' contributions and required that all contributions in federal elections be reported to the Federal Election Commission and made available for public scrutiny. We feared that big money would ultimately find a way to subvert McCain-Feingold and again insert itself into the electoral process. After the Supreme Court's ruling in the Citizens United case found that money was a form of free speech that could not be limited in politics, the floodgates were indeed opened—with massive "independent expenditures" from both the left and right, by corporations and interest groups supporting or opposing campaigns. Groups representing banks, big pharma, women's rights, the gun lobby and others spent millions advancing their interests. The funds they poured into campaigns—"dark money e

ORIENTAL DAILY NEWS - Worldcrunch

Image
Twenty young couples in southeastern Hangzhou recently decided to get hitched without a stitch, wearing only leaves and flowers in rejection of the materialistic concerns frequently associated with marriage in China, Hong-Kong-based Oriental Daily News reports. This was the second year that the Songcheng Anthomaniac Festival organized such a collective wedding ceremony in Hangzhou. Couples braved chilly temperatures and rain as they marched through a corridor of artificial green leaves to pronounce their vows. [rebelmouse-image 27090166 alt="""" original_size="590x393" expand=1] Who cares about rings anyway? — Photo: SIPA Asia/ZUMA Wire The term luohun , which translates to "naked marriage" in English, popped up in the last decade in the country as a number of young couples spurned the idea that a man is qualified to propose only if he already owns an apartment and a car — a notion promoted by many Chinese parents. In a "naked wedding,"

Google News gets more personal with desktop redesign - The Verge

Image
Google News has been given a fresh lick of paint for desktop users on its 20th birthday, with a redesign that gives more prominence to local news and personalized content. Users can now more easily customize the topics they're shown by hitting the blue "customize" button in the right hand column (it appears just below "Picks For You"). They can also add multiple locations to the "Local News" section by hitting the settings button to the right of the Local News header. In practical terms, the biggest change is that various categories of news — like world, business, science, and health — have been moved from the left-hand side of the screen to a menu bar at the top. You can compare the before and after in the screenshots of the new design (up top) and the old look (below).

Andhras Jyothi Yarraji smashes own 100 m hurdles national record in UK - Business Standard

Image
Jyothi Yarraji smashed the women's 100m hurdle national record for the second time in less than two weeks while winning the event at the Loughborough International Athletics Meet in the UK on Sunday. The 22-year-old Jyothi clocked 13.11 seconds under a headwind speed of +0.3m/s to better her own earlier national record of 13.23 she had clocked on May 10 during the Cyprus International Meet in Limassol. The Andhra athlete, who trains under Joseph Hillier at Reliance Foundation Odisha Athletics High Performance Centre in Bhubaneswar, had bettered Anuradha Biswal's national mark of 13.38 which had stood since 2002. That happened a month after her national record effort was not counted due to wind assistance beyond legal limit. She had clocked 13.09 seconds during the Federation Cup in Kozhikode last month but it was not counted as national r
