Google Just Made a Brilliant Announcement That Could Save Millions of Dollars. It's a Lesson in Emotional Intelligence - Inc.

Image
Google is taking a pause. Last week, Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai announced that it would slow down hiring for the rest of the year. But a recent email from Prabhakar Raghavan, a senior vice president at Google, revealed that the company will also feeze all hiring for two weeks, as reported by The Information . "We'll use this time to review our headcount needs and align on a new set of prioritized Staffing Requests for the next three months," Raghavan reportedly said in the email. You may not find this surprising. After all, Facebook parent company Meta also recently announced hiring cutbacks, in addition to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg's claim that he was "turning up the heat" on Meta employees in the face of a global recession. But Google's announcement hinges on a single, very important word:  Pause. With the word "pause," Google demonstrates a more emotionally intelligent approach to Meta's. At the same time, it provides

Google Finally Adds Long-Awaited Google Photos Feature - Forbes

Image
Google is rolling out a small but significant update to its Google Photos service that will make it easier to keep control of your storage. In this recent update, spotted by 9To5Google , Google has added extra information to each photo, allowing you to view its selected backup quality as well as the amount of your precious Google One storage quota it's using. If you have received the update, and not everyone has, you can view the new information by going to the Google Photos web interface, viewing a photo or video and clicking on the 'i' icon for more info. Here you will see a variable list of background information about your photo, including the time and date it was taken, its file name, size, shooting location and the type of device that was used to upload it. In this update, Google has now added a new 'Backed up' section that shows you whether an image is stored in Google's efficient but reduced-quality "storage saver" mode or in the

Opinion | Why Andrew Yang’s New Third Party Is Bound to Fail - The New York Times

Image
Let's not mince words. The new Forward Party announced by the former presidential candidate Andrew Yang, the former governor Christine Todd Whitman and the former congressman David Jolly is doomed to failure. The odds that it will attract any more than a token amount of support from the public, not to mention political elites, are slim to none. It will wither on the vine as the latest in a long history of vanity political parties. Why am I so confident that the Forward Party will amount to nothing? Because there is a recipe for third-party success in the United States, but neither Yang nor his allies have the right ingredients. First, let's talk about the program of the Forward Party. Writing for The Washington Post, Yang, Whitman and Jolly say that their party is a response to "divisiveness" and "extremism." "In a system torn apart by two increasingly divided extremes," they write, "you must reintroduce choice and competition." The Forw

Love Island USA' Took Over NYC With a Cast-Led Pop-Up - TheWrap

Image
A hot new bombshell has entered the villa – and that villa is New York City's meatpacking district. Peacock hosted a "Love Island USA" pop-up event in the Big Apple to celebrate the launch of season four, which is available for viewing exclusively on the streaming platform. Without leaving the concrete jungle, guests of the July 21 and July 22 event were made to feel like a true islander amongst the sandy beaches, lounge seating, umbrellas and cabana staff offering refreshments and misters. It was just like being on the show – except no PTO requests were needed and there was no $100,000 prize up for grabs. Just outside "the villa" doors, guests and passers-by were encouraged to pose for the ultimate photo opp in front a giant heart. "Love Island USA" Season 2 star Cely Vazquez and U.K. islander Kem Centinay tested it out during the press event (see below). Other "Love Island" alums who stopped by the exclusive

Explained: What is Google Street View and why has it launched in India now? - The Indian Express

Image
Google Street View is finally available for ten cities in India and is expected to roll out in about 50 more cities by the end of the year. The 360-degree interactive panorama feature of Google Maps has been available in cities spread over 100 countries since 2007. In India, unlike in other markets, Google Street View is powered by images from third parties as per the National Geospatial Policy, 2021. What is Google Street View? Google Street View is an immersive 360-degree view of a location captured using special cameras mounted on vehicles or on backpacks by data collectors moving around the city streets. The images are then patched together to create a 360-degree view which users can swipe through to get a detailed view of the location. It is available to view on Android and iOS using the app, or as a web view. Why was Street View not enabled in India? In 2011, the Bangalore City Police stopped vehicles capturing images for Google Street View. Though there was no clarity

VICTOIRE INGABIRE UMUHOZA - Without Political Reforms Rwandans Will Continue to Seek Refuge Abroad - The Elephant

Image
Download PDF Print Article Rwanda, a country to which the UK plans to deport asylum seekers, has been producing refugees since its independence on the 1st of July 1962. Successive regimes have used any and all means to stay in power, refusing to implement governance reforms and causing the country to experience cycles of violence that have led Rwandans to seek refuge in other countries. Already, the independence of Rwanda was preceded by a revolution in 1959 that forced Rwandans into exile. The first ever ruling party to lead Rwanda, the Party for Hutu Emancipation (MDR-Parmehutu) gradually transformed the multi-party political system into a single party system. It made no attempt to address the social grievances engendered by the 1959 revolution and nor did it engage directly with those Rwandans who had fled Rwanda during the revolution to agree on their safe and voluntary return to their motherland. In 1973, the then President of Rwanda Grégoire Kayibanda was overthrown through

Google and the Internet Archive are the first customers to gain commercial access to Wikipedia content - TechCrunch

Image
Google is going to start paying for its use of Wikipedia information to help power its knowledge panels in Google Search. The search giant, along with the digital library the Internet Archive, are the first customers for the still relatively new commercial product launched by the Wikimedia Foundation — the nonprofit that operates Wikipedia. Its new service, Wikimedia Enterprise, offers access to Wikimedia content to companies that reuse and source Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects at a high volume. For years, Google has used information from Wikipedia to offer web searchers quick answers and basic facts through the use of what it called knowledge panels, first introduced in 2012. This feature pulls information from freely available online resources, including Wikipedia, Google Books and other sources. Other tech giants have also leveraged Wikipedia's information in their own products. Facebook, for example, in 2020 had tested Wikipedia-powered information panels similar to G

Would a Second Term Save Donald Trump from Prosecution? - Northeastern University

Image
What happens when two forces—inherently at odds—clash, as they soon could in the world of former President Donald Trump? On the one hand, Trump is gearing up for a presidential run in 2024. At the same time, he is facing potential criminal indictments in Georgia and by the U.S. Justice Department for promulgating falsehoods about the 2020 election and his role in the Jan. 6 insurrection, respectively.  Trump, whose candidacy in the 2024 presidential race is all but confirmed, has told those close to him that by pursuing a second term in the White House, he believes the accompanying executive privileges will shield him from ongoing and future prosecution, according to a Rolling Stone report. Experts Say Russia Turns to Sanctioned North Korea to Break Rules - Voice of America - VOA News

Image
WASHINGTON —  Russian and North Korea, both beset by punishing economic sanctions, appear to be looking for ways to help one another while thumbing their noses at the rules-based order espoused by the wider international community, experts say. Five months after invading Ukraine, Russia is being hit by successive rounds of sanctions by the U.S. and its partners. The latest came Tuesday when the U.K. announced new sanctions on Russian officials. Weeks earlier, on June 28, the U.S. targeted 70 entities, many of them in Russia's defense industry. The European Union issued a sixth rounds of sanctions that included Russia's central bank, top officials and oil exports, and on July 17 proposed a seventh sanctions package that will impact Russian gold and an expanded list of dual-use goods and technology. Sanctions violations Short of allies, Moscow has begun casting about for new economic relationships. Russian Ambassador to North Korea Alexander Matsegora said

Soup kitchens feed Sri Lanka's poor amid bleak economic crisis - KELO

Image
By Alasdair Pal COLOMBO (Reuters) – With no fuel and no money for food, H. G. Indrani and her family of nine trudged for an hour to a community kitchen in Colombo, in hopes of finding a simple vegetarian meal. Rampant food inflation and chronic shortages of cooking gas and petrol are making daily life a battle for millions in the midst of Sri Lanka's worst economic crisis since independence from Britain in 1948. "There is no income," said Indrani, one of hundreds queuing in the midday sun at a makeshift kitchen run by a church. "There is no food most of the time, we have been suffering a lot." The price of a kilogram of rice had risen to 250 rupees, from 90 rupees six months ago, she said. "There is no food at home," the 57-year-old added. "We will have to suffer more. We only want to eat, to survive." Two dozen volunteers boil rice, dice onions and scrape the flesh from coconuts as they cook over open fires due to the shortage of gas in

Factbox: The legitimacy crisis in Libya's political institutions - Reuters

Image
July 3 (Reuters) - Libyan protesters want the political authorities to quit and hold elections after previous transitional periods created institutions that clung on long after their mandates expired. Here are Libya's main political institutions that have so far failed to overcome entrenched differences between rival authorities in the east and west of the country, a divide that emerged after the 2011 toppling of autocrat Muammar Gaddafi. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES Libya's House of Representatives was elected in 2014 as the national parliament with a four-year mandate to oversee a transition to a new constitution prepared by another elected body. But the legitimacy of the 2014 election was disputed and the previous legislature refused to hand over power, accelerating a split between warring factions in the east and west of Libya. The Libyan Political Agreement in 2015 brought international recognition for the House of Representatives as the legitimate parliament, the High State C

Ukrainians flee occupied territories through Russian 'filtration' checks - FRANCE 24 English

Issued on: 25/07/2022 - 19:18 Modified: 25/07/2022 - 19:21 As Ukrainian counter-offensives gather momentum to win back the city of Kherson, inhabitants in some Russian-occupied territories have been advised to leave. Russian forces are letting them out, but only if they pass time-consuming and stressful checks known as "filtration". FRANCE 24's correspondents met some of them. In this reception centre near Zaporizhzhia, many internally displaced Ukrainians have come from the south, fleeing Russian-occupied areas. "We feel like we've crossed into another world. As soon as we crossed we realised that we're in a free country because here it's clean. There by the checkpoint it's so dirty and there are so many Russian soldiers," said Yulia, who just arrived after fleeing the region of Kherson. Peop

IHC summons Jang Group chief over 'anti-judiciary' advertisements - DAWN.com

Image
The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Wednesday summoned Jang/Geo media group owner Mir Shakilur Rehman over anti-judiciary advertisements published in English daily The News International over the past two days. The court, which had taken notice of the matter, also asked Rehman and the newspaper's editor, Amir Ghauri, to submit affidavits tendering an apology. The advertisements in question were printed in the newspaper's May 23 and 24 editions. These ads, according to the media outlet, were sponsored by the family of Barrister Fahad Malik, who was gunned down in Islamabad in 2016. It called on Chief Justice of Pakistan Umar (CJP) Umar Ata Bandial to take notice, claiming that the killers "had struck a deal with the ruling judge in the case". The family urged the CJP to allow the case to be transferred to an "impartial and non-partisan judge of dignity". They also called for establishing a larger bench to hear the appeal pending in the apex court a

Why Marriott Stock Was Up Big on Tuesday - The Motley Fool

Image
What Happened Shares of Marriott International  (MAR 1.38% ) were on the rise on Tuesday, up 4.38% to $150.92 at the closing bell. It was a good day on the markets overall, as the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 754 points, or 2.43%, while the S&P 500 finished up 105 points, or 2.76%, on the day. Marriott's jump was due to several factors, but perhaps most notably, it spiked on a very positive industry report. So what Smith Travel Research, which is the primary data source for hotel industry trends, released its monthly hotel performance report for June on Tuesday, and it was a doozy. In June, the hotel industry reported its highest monthly room rates on record, with the average daily rate (ADR) at $155.04, up 15.3% over June 2019 (pre-pandemic). Meanwhile, revenue per available room (RevPAR) also hit a record at $108.64 -- a 10.3% increase over June 2019. Occupancy rates, however, were down slightly, about 4.3% co

Sun Pharma, Glenmark recall products in US due to manufacturing issues - Business Standard

Leading drug makers Sun Pharma and Glenmark are recalling products in the US, the world's largest market for medicines, due to lapses in the manufacturing process. As per the latest enforcement report by the US Food and Drug Administration (USFDA), a US-based unit of Sun Pharma is recalling 50,680 vials of Testosterone Cypionate Injection, used to treat low testosterone in adult males, in the American market. According to the US health regulator, the Mumbai-based drug major is recalling the affected lot due to "water leakage" leading to deviation from current good manufacturing practices (cGMP). The company is also recalling 27 vials of the same medication due to cGMP deviations, USFDA said. "Manufacturing deviations were reported due to an abnormal appearance on parts of machinery," it added. The affected lot was pro
