Newspaper headlines: Queen of broken hearts and Russia 'gives up' on Kyiv - BBC.com

Image
"Russians give up on conquest of Kyiv" is the Daily Telegraph 's headline, following Moscow's announcement that it will drastically reduce "hostilities" against the Ukrainian capital and the city of Chernihiv in the north. The paper says Vladimir Putin has "failed" in his plan to capture Kyiv - and is now focusing on the Donbas region in the east, as Ukraine offers a neutrality deal. It also talks of Western scepticism over the extent and purpose of the withdrawal. The Times has the same lead, and highlights British and American doubts about President Putin's intentions to scale back attacks on Kyiv. "They must think we were born yesterday," Defence Secretary Ben Wallace is quoted as saying. "Is Putin really serious about the peace deal, or is it another ruse?" is the question posed by the Daily Mail. "It's Russian roulette," according to the Metro, which says that while Mr Putin is starting to withdraw some of

Timnit Gebru, AI researcher fired by Google thinks a new law is needed - MarketWatch

Image
When she co-led Google's Ethical AI team, Timnit Gebru was a prominent insider voice questioning the tech industry's approach to artificial intelligence. That was before Google GOOG, -0.42%  pushed her out of the company more than a year ago. Now Gebru is trying to make change from the outside as the founder of the Distributed Artificial Intelligence Research Institute, or DAIR. Born to Eritrean parents in Ethiopia, Gebru spoke with The Associated Press recently about how poorly Big Tech's AI priorities — and its AI-fueled social media platforms — serve Africa and elsewhere. The new institute focuses on AI research from the perspective of the places and people most likely to experience its harms. She's also co-founder of the group Black in AI, which promotes Black employment and leadership in the field. And she's known for co-authoring a landmark 2018 study that found racial and gender bias in facial re

Blow to PTI as MQM-P decides to support Opposition’s no-trust move - Daily Pakistan Global

Image
ISLAMABAD – The Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P), a key ally part of the ruling PTI, has decided to support the joint Opposition in the no-Confidence motion against Prime Minister Imran Khan. The development was announced by MQM-P leader Faisal Subzwari and PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari on Twitter, serving a big dent to the PTI ambitions to complete the five-year term. The no-trust motion was tabled in the National Assembly against the premier earlier this week, with voting is expected to be held on April 3. Since the motion was filed on March 8, both the government and Opposition were struggling to achieve the numbers ahead of the vote. Recently, the premier managed to woo the PML-Q by offering the position of the chief minister to Pervaiz Elahi. However, it has now lost the majority as the joint Opposition has achieved the number for the success of its no-confidence motion. With MQM-P's 7 seats, the Opposition now has support of 177 members in the Nationa

Trump brazenly asks Putin to release dirt about Biden's family - CNN

Image
Washington (CNN) In a new interview published Tuesday, former President Donald Trump called on Russian President Vladimir Putin to release any damaging information he has about the Biden family, in a brazen request for domestic political assistance from America's top adversary. It's the latest example of Trump's willingness to solicit and embrace domestic political help from foreign powers -- even from Putin, who is currently overseeing a bloody war against Ukraine. In an interview with JustTheNews, Trump pushed an unproven claim about Hunter Biden's business dealings in Russia, and asked Putin to release any information that he might have about the situation. It's not clear that any material exists, or if the Kremlin has access to it. "I would think Putin would know the answer to that," Trump said, referring to Hunter Biden's potential dealings in Russia. "I think he should release it. I think we should know that answer." It is true that Hun

Google’s Pixel 6 is great — but stay close to a charger - Digital Trends

Image
The Pixel 6 is the nicest phone Google has ever released — and I've used quite a few of them, from the Pixel 3 XL to the Pixel 3a XL to the Pixel 4a, 5, 5a 5G, and now 6. It's a very good phone with many things to like, including a standout design. No phone is perfect though, and the Pixel 6 has a pretty glaring flaw for me, personally. After using it since December, I've had a few thoughts about what Google's current flagship does well in the long term, and what it does wrong. Our original Pixel 6 review captures the full breadth of the Pixel 6 (and 6 Pro's) capabilities, so feel free to go there for a more holistic overview. A unique look inside and out Andy Boxall/Digital Trends The Pixel 6 has one thing that sets it apart from other Android phones — its design. It is unmistakable from the rear as it avoids the square camera bump trend and recalls the visor used in the Nexus 6P days. Dimension-wise, it is slender in the hand, and it doesn't feel heavy

How to Watch Trump Arizona Rally: Time, Live Stream for Former President's Florence Rally - Newsweek

Image
Former President Donald Trump is holding his first rally of 2022 on January 15, an event where he's likely to hit back at "weak Republicans," the 2020 presidential election and the January 6 Capitol riot. Trump's rally comes a week after the one-year anniversary of the January 6 insurrection, during which a mob of his supporters breached the Capitol. The former president has denied he bears any responsibility for the violence that transpired and has started dismissing that an insurrection occurred in January, calling the 2020 election the "real insurrection." Trump's speech at the rally is set to begin at 7 p.m. mountain time and will take place at Canyon Moon Ranch in Florence, Arizona. Newsmax will live stream his remarks. The former president is at the center of the investigation of the House committee looking into the Capitol riot and has fought the committee's quest for many of his records. Trump accused the committee of being a partisan attack

A new fund directs its support to Ukraine's long-term needs - The Associated Press - en Español

The humanitarian needs of more than 10 million displaced Ukrainians have quickly become staggering. Yet Mark Malloch-Brown, president of the Open Society Foundations, warns that longer-term problems resulting from Russia's invasion will grow ever larger if they aren't sufficiently addressed now. Experts report an "unprecedented" outpouring of aid for food, medicine and other essential needs of Ukrainians. Comparatively few donations, though, have been earmarked for maintaining Ukraine's culture or democratic foundations. To address that cause, Open Society Foundations has launched the Ukraine Democracy Fund with a $25 million pledge, in hopes of raising $100 million. The foundations, launched by billionaire investor George Soros, are now one of the world's largest funders of democracy, human rights and justice groups. "Keeping their civil society alive absolutely is the key bit," said Malloch-Brown, who has also served as the United Nations deputy se

Political Typology Reveals Deep Fissures on the Right and Left - Pew Research Center

Image
Nearly a year after Donald Trump was elected president, the Republican coalition is deeply divided on such major issues as immigration, America's role in the world and the fundamental fairness of the U.S. economic system. The Democratic coalition is largely united in staunch opposition to President Trump. Yet, while Trump's election has triggered a wave of political activism within the party's sizable liberal bloc, the liberals' sky-high political energy is not nearly as evident among other segments in the Democratic base. And Democrats also are internally divided over U.S. global involvement, as well as some religious and social issues. These are among the findings of Pew Research Center's new political typology, which sorts Americans into cohesive groups based on their values, attitudes and party affiliation, and provides a unique perspective on the nation's changing political landscape. Why Apple will soon lose its tight grip on the App Store - Yahoo Finance

Subscribe Wednesday, March 23, 2022 Apple (AAPL) may soon be forced to loosen its vice-like grip on its App Store, as regulators from the U.S. to South Korea zero in on the tech giant's high-margin business. Developers ranging from Spotify (SPOT) to "Fortnite"-maker Epic have railed for years against the so-called Apple tax, a 30% fee Apple charges larger developers on app sales. Those efforts could soon pay off, if Apple wants to keep doing business in the European Union: The EU is expected to approve its Digital Markets Act (DMA), a landmark piece of legislation that should free developers from Apple's fees. And that could cost Apple billions. "They've been under pressure for some time [to lower Apple Store fees]," NYU Stern School of Business professor Vasant Dha

The Garfield Inn - Stay In This #1 Adorable Example Of Pioneer Elegance In Port Austin Michigan - Thumbwind - Finding Fun In Michigan

A Michigan Thumb Landmark – The Garfield Inn The name of the "Garfield Inn" is really a misnomer. The 20 th President of the United States, James Garfield, did not build or own the landmark 1850s Inn in Port Austin Michigan. But he was a rather frequent visitor. The fascinating history of the Inn really resides with the family that built the house, Charles and Maria Learned.  Information was found in an article published in 1884 which serves to give a fascinating story of the man who built the mansion. Charles Learned – Huron County's Pioneer Developer Erie Canal – Syracuse – From Post Card from Onondaga County Public Library collection Charles Learned started his career as a businessman in 1835, at the age of 18. He took a contract in his father's name to build one mile of the aqueduct on the waterworks of the city of New York, at Dobbs' Ferry. When he became of age he had made his first $10,000. He was one of the builders of the Erie Canal and construc
