Map Explainer: Key Facts About Ukraine - Visual Capitalist

Image
The modern state of Ukraine was formed nearly 30 years ago after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. Since then, the country has often made headlines due to political instability and the looming threat of a Russian invasion. In the map graphic above, we examine Ukraine from a structural point of view. What's the country's population composition? What drives the country's economy? And most importantly, why is the country important within a global context? Where Do People Live in Ukraine? With a population of nearly 44 million people, Ukraine is the eighth-most populous country in Europe. For perspective, that is slightly smaller than Spain, and four times larger than Greece. As the cartogram below demonstrates, a large portion of the country's population is located in and around the capital Kyiv, along with the Donetsk region—which is front and center in the current conflict with Russia. Not surprisingly, many of the country's Russian speaking citi

What’s New in Chrome 88, Available Now - How-To Geek

Google released Chrome 88 to the stable channel on January 19, 2021. The new browser version includes some cool changes, including an improved dark theme for Windows 10 and the beginning of less intrusive permission prompts. Here are the highlights. Better Dark Theme Support on Windows 10 Chrome has supported Windows 10's system-wide dark theme for a while, but Chrome 88 makes it a little better. FTP support is a legacy feature that has no support for encrypted connections (no FTPS). An attacker could modify files you're downloading in transit, unlike with encrypted HTTPS or FTPS where this isn't possible. As Chrome and ot

Russia state TV paints Moscow as savior of eastern Ukraine - Associated Press

Image
MOSCOW (AP) — As the West sounded the alarm about the Kremlin ordering troops into eastern Ukraine and decried it as an invasion, Russian state media painted a completely different picture — of Moscow coming to the rescue of war-torn areas tormented by Ukraine's aggression and bringing them peace. The fanfare came hours after Vladimir Putin announced Russia's recognition of the separatist areas in eastern Ukraine as independent states and ordered its troops to "maintain peace" in territory where Russia-backed rebels have been fighting Kyiv's forces since 2014 — a conflict that has killed over 14,000 people. TV presenters hailed the "historic" day and professed the end of suffering for the residents of the breakaway regions. "You paid with your blood for these eight years of torment and anticipation," anchor Olga Skabeyeva told residents of the areas known as Donbas during a popular political talk show Tuesday morning on Russia 1 state TV. How to depolarize a country - Vox.com

Last week, the Democrats' voting rights bills went down in flames, defeated by the Senate filibuster and united Republican opposition. While this doesn't signal the immediate collapse of American democracy as some have lamented, it does mean that, at least for now, Congress will not take action to repair a political system that is barreling toward a crisis. At times like these, it's worth taking a step back to reassess things. Just what exactly are the roots of our current democratic decay, and what can we to do fix it? Lee Drutman, a senior fellow in the political reform program at New America, has a clear answer: transform the way our elections work. In his 2020 book Breaking the Two-Party Doom Loop , Drutman argued that the very nature of a two-party system tends toward extreme polarization and conflict. Because voters and parties are forced into binary choices and competition, they come to see the other side not just as rivals but as enemies. What's more, two-p

SOS: Brooklyn couple's refund is a gas | Just Ask Us | madison.com - Madison.com

No one's saying AmeriGas held a grudge against Deb Hamele and her husband for switching from propane to natural gas, but it sure made them pay — at least for a few months. Natural gas service through Alliant Energy became available in the rural Brooklyn area where the Hameles live in late 2020. They did the math and determined that switching from tank-based propane would save them hundreds in home heating costs. The couple canceled their account with AmeriGas on June 1, Hamele said, but when the company hauled the tank away four months later, it was still 40% full. As they'd already paid for that leftover propane, they asked for a refund. And in her Jan. 30 email to SOS, Deb noted language contained in the terms and conditions on AmeriGas' website: "Company will repurchase the propane remaining in Leased Equipment upon termination if the supply of propane remaining in the tank at the time of removal is more than 5% water capacity. If Company repurchases the remaining p
