McConnell joins Trump, backs Herschel Walker in Georgia's 2022 GOP Senate primary - Fox News

Image
Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell on Wednesday endorsed former NFL star Herschel Walker's bid for a U.S. Senate seat in Georgia, a key battleground state the GOP hopes to flip from blue to red in next year's midterm elections. In doing so, the Kentucky senator joins former President Donald Trump in backing Walker, who briefly played for a Trump-owned team in the long-defunct USFL. McConnell's move comes amid a nearly yearlong war of words between the two GOP giants over Trump's repeated emphasis on re-litigating his 2020 election loss to now-President Biden, and his numerous calls for McConnell to be ousted as Senate Republican leader. The senator's endorsement, which was shared first with Fox News and Politico, signals that the GOP Senate leadership – and with it much of the party establishment in the nation's capital -- is rallying around Walker's bid to challenge Democratic incumbent U.S. Sen. Raphael Warnock in a race next year that may determine

Here’s how to get the Google Play Store running on Windows 11 - The Verge

Image
A developer and design student has managed to get the Google Play Store working on Windows 11. Google's Android app store is fully functional within Windows 11 using this method, allowing you to install a game or app and run it alongside traditional Windows apps. Microsoft started testing Windows 11 Android app support last week, but the official implementation is limited to the Amazon Appstore and less than 50 apps during the preview phase. Getting the Google Play Store installed opens Windows 11 up to every Android app or game you'd want to use. ADeltaX, an Italian UX design student, has successfully installed the Google Play Store on Windows 11, and detailed all the steps required to get it working. If you're not familiar with Linux commands or command prompts, then the install process won't be the most straightforward, but ADeltaX has created a video guide for those who really want to get this running. I managed to get the Google Play Store up and running on

Nepalis on social media take a dig at Oli over his criticism of a Kantipur cartoon - The Kathmandu Post

Image
Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli's loathing for the media is not new. Over the past few months, it has just grown. On Sunday, Oli reacted sharply to a cartoon published by Kantipur, the Post's sister paper, in what comes as his growing intolerance of free press and freedom of expression, the two most cherished achievements of Nepal ever since democracy was reinstated in 1990. Addressing a press conference at Baluwatar on Sunday afternoon, Oli expressed his strong dissatisfaction over the cartoon, calling it a misuse of the right to freedom given by democracy. "How much they must have rejoiced in the disgusting act of making a huge cartoon of a ghost institution, and placing the president in its pocket in the name of democracy," said Oli. "Monarchy is a dead institution. How dare they make such a macabre cartoon of that dead institution and put an institution that represents the people and a symbol of the republic in the pocket of a dead feudal institution?" In t

Google Pixel 6 event: rumors, news, and announcements - The Verge

Image
Google may have already announced the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro, but it looks like the company may still have a few more surprises in store for us — or at least a few more details. Despite announcing the new phones earlier this year, the tech giant will hold a virtual Pixel event on October 19th at 1PM ET / 10AM PT. During the "Pixel Fall Launch" event, we anticipate we'll learn more about the new phones and their respective specs. The company may also announce a new subscription bundle called "Pixel Pass," which would add an extended warranty and premium subscriptions to Google services like YouTube to the new Pixel phones. We expect Google will explore the Pixel 6's new Tensor SoC chipset in more detail, too, much of which still remains a mystery. Reports indicate that Google's first in-house chip consists of a combination of new cores and

MANILA (PHILIPPINE DAILY INQUIRER/ASIA NEWS NETWORK) - It's both fascinating and alarming to hear some reasons ordinary people have reportedly been giving for favouring the late dictator's son as their likely choice for president in next year's elections. Those of us who lived through the excesses in that dark period of our nation's history find it unthinkable that our country would return that family to the palace. Outside observers have already found it puzzling (to say the least) how Filipino voters have actually permitted the immediate members of that family, save for one, to occupy positions of political power in the past decades. With hindsight, it's hardly surprising that the dictator's son now has a credible shot at the top office of the land. In an election where 52 per cent of the voters will be under 40 years of age, as reported by the Commission on Elections, those of us with vivid memories of how the martial law years wrecked our country and its

US Vs. International Markets: More Of The Same - Investing.com

This article was originally published at The Humble Dollar. Do I sound like a broken record? Last week, the performance gap between U.S. and foreign stocks widened even further. The Vanguard Total Stock Market Index Fund ETF (NYSE:) has now returned 21.6% so far in 2021, while the Vanguard FTSE All World ex-U.S. ETF (NYSE:) is up just 9.4%. International funds' relative weakness has become so routine that it rarely makes the financial news. What's different this time: The economic landscape would seem to favor foreign shares, particularly emerging markets. Go back one year. Stock markets around the world were in a garden-variety correction—dropping about 10% from their third-quarter peak—with technology companies feeling the brunt of the selling. Small caps and value sectors were holding up a little better. Then the buying frenzy began anew, and we got the second wave of the COVID-19 bull market that began in March 2020. As 2021 dawned, foreign markets were outperformin

Maverick Modeller Helmut Norpoth Predicts Another Win for Trump | | SBU News - Stony Brook News

Image
Political scientist Helmut Norpoth fields media calls every week seeking comment on the upcoming presidential election. Why the interest? In 2016, he was one of a handful of experts who correctly predicted the outcome of the U.S. Presidential election. Helmut Norpoth Norpoth, a professor in Stony Brook's Department of Political Science, has enjoyed notable success forecasting elections based on his Primary Model, a statistical representation of U.S. presidential races based on data going back more than a century. In 2020, his model once again projects a Trump victory, giving the incumbent President a 90-percent chance of being re-elected in a landslide — a controversial call that runs contrary to current polls. The Primary Model has correctly predicted five of the past six presidential elections, and when applied to previous elections, correctly predicts an impressive 25 of the last 27, missing only the 2000 election in which George W. Bush defeated Al Gore and the 1960 ele

The two wild-card matchups are done. Now all the postseason teams will be taking the field. The Red Sox defeated their rival Yankees  in the AL wild-card game to set up a match against the Rays, who finished the 2021 regular season as the top team after winning the 2020 AL pennant. The Dodgers prevailed in a low-scoring affair against the Cardinals  in the NL wild-card game with a walk-off homer  to move on to the NLDS to face the NL West champion Giants. The remaining division series matchups each bring plenty of intrigue. The Braves, once based in Milwaukee, will return to Wisconsin to take on the Brewers in a battle of the East and Central division champions. TFI needs drivers at leaner, meaner UPS Freight successor - FreightWaves

Image
TFI International bought UPS Freight with plans to make the LTL carrier "lean and mean," a turn of phrase CEO Alain Bédard likes to use. While the company is implementing that strategy, including recent cuts to salespeople, one thing it needs more of is truck drivers.  As of late July, Montreal-based TFI (NYSE:TFII) was employing 5% fewer Teamsters members — about 10,540 people — in the rebranded TForce Freight than the 11,100 UPS (NYSE:UPS) had as of Dec. 31, according to a recent SEC filing. While TFI and the Teamsters, which represent more than 75% of TForce Freight employees, declined to comment on the drop, sources close to the company and union said drivers had been leaving faster than they're being hired. The issue reflects, in part, a larger problem facing the trucking industry: hiring and retaining drivers. But comments made by Bédard to financial analysts in July suggested that the change in ownership compounded the issue. "

Will Matthew McConaughey run for governor of Texas? - Los Angeles Times

Image
AUSTIN, Texas —  Is he or isn't he? Texans want to know. Since spring, movie star Matthew McConaughey has been toying with the idea of a run for governor of Texas but has refused to commit, relishing the spotlight celebs are accustomed to while promoting his new memoir, "Greenlights." For the record: 5:18 p.m. Oct. 17, 2021 An earlier version of this report referred to "this week" throughout the article instead of "last week." 4:56 p.m. Oct. 17, 2021 An earlier version of this report said Matthew McConaughey played a gay AIDS patient in "Dallas Buyers Club." He played an AIDS patient. But while the actor, who lives in the Lone Star State's capital, Austin, remains on the sideline without saying what he plans to do, some who want to occupy the office either have placed themselves in a holding pattern, choosing to wait and see what McConaughey does, or are wringing their hands about his possible run.
